Shawna Pandya is no stranger to adventure, having experienced much
- from skiing the French Alps to working in the Medical Division of
the European Astronaut Centre in Germany to diving in the Great Barrier
Reef of Australia and swimming with the dolphins in Mexico.
A 2007 Rhodes provincial finalist, she also believes in the power
of education for achieving one’s vision. Having completed Bachelors’
and Masters’ degrees in Honors Neuroscience at the University of Alberta
and Space Studies at the International Space University in France,
she is now back in Alberta completing an MD degree. Using these backgrounds,
she is pursuing her passion for using space technologies to guarantee
medical care to areas in need, having presented her work as far as
India and France, and currently writing a chapter on this topic for
an upcoming book.
Beyond this, Shawna is an internationally accomplished black belt
in taekwon-do and a skilled musician, composing and singing songs
on piano and guitar for causes like Amnesty International. Shawna
is also passionate about human rights issues, and is presently working
with Dr. Alice Khin, former physician to Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu
Kyi, to draw attention to human rights abuses in Burma.
